The Swedish Institute Alexandria together with the Centre for Arab Unity Studies in Beirut is at present organizing a three-day seminar in Hamamet, Tunisia, on the state and religion in the Arab world. About 70 scholars from nineteen countries participate and a number of interesting papers are presented. The seminar focuses on the relationship between the state and religion in contemporary societies in the MENA region as well as in Europe. Historic comparisons are done and the relationship between religion and the state in Turkey compared to that in Iran is also discussed during the seminar. Another topic in the seminar deals with approaches of reforming contemporary religious discourse. We are developing plans to publish a book about this important seminar.
